3 Months Old!

Today Bennett is 3 months old! His main accomplishments to date are his feeding abilities and his weight gain. Which for a baby that had a huge hole in his heart, that is a big accomplishment. He now takes about 5-7 ounces (in about 25 minutes-used to be marathon feedings) every 3 hours and weighs 12.6 pounds. He was just under 11 pounds the day of his surgery two weeks ago. And to think I thought he was going to lose weight during his hospital stay!

Bennett is getting much better at holding his head up and I've started putting him in the bumbo chair just for short periods of time and while he's still got some work to do, he's definitely making progress...

Okay I'm laughing because this picture is sooo deceiving...he held this position for about 5 seconds before his head flopped back.

This is more what it has been like but like I said, he's making progress.

I received a couple of comments regarding his tummy time and when I could start that. I went to the cardiologist and he said tummy time could resume once the scab from his chest tube came off which he thought would be in a week or so. So I was incorrect in thinking I had to wait to put him on his tummy and the scab fell off so we've resumed that but I can tell it's a little uncomfortable for him. Or maybe he's just out of practice because he's having a hard time lifting his head when he could lift it some before the surgery. Again, it's a work in progress.

Another really cute thing Bennett has started to do is suck his thumb. I know, I know, this is probably not the best habit to encourage but coming from someone who sucked their thumb until they were 7...yes, I said 7... it's not going to kill him and I'm pretty sure all my kids will need braces at some point. So for now it's just his little self soothing method and that's something babies his age are supposed to be doing so we'll just count that as a little milestone;) Here he is trying to figure out the thumb sucking thing...

********

So the overall consensus from my post about the washing hands sign was that it was a good idea. I think the fact that Bennett had open heart surgery and he qualifies for the RSV shot because of his heart (still waiting to hear from my ped. though about that-grrr!) it's okay to have it on his car seat. If I look a little snotty because of it...oh well. If he didn't have OHS, I wouldn't have it on there but he did so it will stay. But like a friend of mine said, Ainsley will be sure to tell anyone and everyone to "...not touch the baby" before they even see the little sign-lol. She's just a tad bit protective of her baby brother.

Happy 3 months Bennett! I love you bub!

  2. Oh my goodness , Bennett is so beautiful. I love thumb suckers. Honestly your so right, he's probably going to need braces one day anyway, let him enjoy his little thumb.I have a 7 year old thumb sucker, I mean she's not going to walk down the isle still with her thumb in her mouth, right?
Happy 3 months to your sweetie.

  3. I LOVE me a thumb sucker!!! They're usually the best babies, too! I was one. =)
I was in tears watching my daughter's sonogram when I realized my grandson was sucking his thumb, but couldn't get him to do it after birth--- he just wanted FOOD! LOL We forced ;) him to take a paci recently (he's 6 months) because the only time he's rotten is on the 3 hour car trips between his house and ours. Hey, a Mimi's gotta do what a Mimi's gotta do, right?
Bennett is gorgeous, as always! =)

  6. I sucked my thumb until 5 th grade, in private of course! Isn't that gross! I think it is better to suck the thumb than have 2 year olds using a pacifier. Cute pics!

  7. Soo cute. Bennett you are a superstar. Keep up the amazing work. I say let him suck his thumb..it's good for oral stimulation and it's so cute. He is doing amazing after his surgery.
ps. thanks for the quote...it has me thinking about a lot of things:)

  8. Too cute - we just took pictures of Max in that same outfit in the Bumbo!! We didn't have a Bumbo for our daughter - I can't believe how awesome it is. At almost 5 months, Max is using it all by himself for brief stints. Bennett looks like he'll be doing the same in no time {probably a month or two sooner than Max}! And I love when Max finds his thumb - I wish he did it more often :) That video is too cute.

  9. Happy 3 months Baby B!!! I too sucked my thumb until like 5 or 6 and I actually never needed braces!
Someone told me once that thumb sucking was great for baby's with DS....something about bringing the hand to midline and finding their thumb was a great thing as well as the oral motor exercise from the sucking! So Bennett is doing great!!!

  11. So great he has found his thumb! He's doing so well. Try tummy time with a towel or something soft rolled up under his arms and chest or on a couch cushion with toys on the floor so it's not so hard for him. He's so cute :)

  14. Go Bennett!!! He is so precious!!! And I am jealous he has so much hair!! LOL, I was just about to pull my Bumbo seat out for Parker! They didn;t make them when my others were little, so this is so fun! Glad to know it isn't too early, Adrienne you and I think SOOO much alike!! And Parker LOVES his fingers and hands...a new found favorite toy...which is why I am now not letting even his siblings touch his hands since they are constantly "wet" from his mouth..and no, I don't discourage the thumb sucking like I did with the others since I know it is good! As soon as my sign comes it is going up on his carseat. What amazing weight gain too, great work Mom and Bennett!!! Happy 3 month bday!! Love Lara & Parker!!

  16. Happy 3 months Bennett!! Joel was a thumb sucker too! I think it is cute but I worry a bit about it - he still sucks it when he is falling asleep!

Bennett is doing so well! I can't believe he had such major surgery just a few weeks ago. That sure is one strong little boy you have!

  17. He is SOOOO cute!!!! Kennedy used to suck her thumb... then we had it removed! Don't tell Bennett that! LOL (It was an extra thumb in our defense, but she didn't suck any more thumbs or fingers after that! haha) I think he's doing just great!! Five seconds at a time! :)

  18. Go Bennett! Gabriel has the same sign. He thinks it is the best chew toy ever;).

Little Bennett is eating better than Gabriel and weighs as much as Gabriel did at 6 months. Way to go Bennett! Such a strong little man!

  19. Such a cutie! I love the crab outfit! LOL. Ahh, the sucking of thumbs and fingers is such a topic as of late. I'm not letting Nika suck her two fingers anymore because her palate is forming around them from the suction. Ahh. The dentist also already told us she will need braces, but I'm not sure braces will help a misformed palate? Decisions decisions. On the other hand, it is good practice for forming a suck! LOL

  20. Awww, look at what a big man he is, sitting in his little chair! Great picture. And you're right not to worry about the thumb sucking. I don't think I ever sucked my thumb, but for some reason I loved pacifiers. I think I was about four years old before my parents could pry it away from me.

    Have a great week!
