5 Months-It's Going Way Too Fast!!

Yep, you guessed it, Bennett is 5 months old today! This month we've heard a lot more talking, a lot more thumb slurping and still not much crying {lovely}! He's reaching and playing with his toys, likes to kick up his legs and try to grab his toes but mostly Bennett just loves to be cuddled-that's when he turns the charm on. He can totally be fussing (although that doesn't happen much) and as soon as you scoop him up he's grinning from ear to ear and giggling away. Bennett is tipping the scales at right under 15 pounds and I'm guessing about 25-26 inches.

He gets therapy twice a week now and he's doing quite well. We're working on keeping him in a sitting position and as usual, head control. He has not rolled from his back to his belly yet but he gets so close- Harper was the exact same way and did not actually do it until almost 8 months! I think he'll get there before that though.

We've introduced a new toy- the exersaucer! Another huge and bulky toy to clutter up our tiny family room, yay! Just kidding...anything for my kids! Bennett seems to enjoy it, he still needs support behind him but it's nice because he can be on the girl's level as they fly by him while they're playing.

Loving the new toys.

Can I get a smile Bennett??
There's my happy little boy!

Just can't get enough of him!

Still a tad bit too short to reach the base-that's okay though!

I've also been using a spoon to help Bennett get used to it being in his mouth. Ainsley had to go to a feeding therapist when she was a baby so I remember a lot of the techniques used there and he does so much better than Ainsley did I must say. I tried oatmeal cereal (I prefer oatmeal over rice) once and he did okay but I think we'll hold off a couple more weeks since he doesn't take too much formula (26-28 ounces) and honestly I need to think about how I'm going to add it into the morning routine which right now is always chaotic!

He has his 5 month check up next week so more vaccines (I think) and the RSV shot and then flu shots next month... poor guy.

I will be requesting physical therapy next month (he sees an OT now but she's doing everything a PT would be doing) as well as speech. We'll see if I get speech this early but I am very good a nagging so they'll give in eventually;) I think I may start sign language next month too. Never been a fan of it with my typical kids because I always felt like it would replace actually speech but as my OT says, you are saying the word as you are signing it and while they might not get it for a while, they will get it eventually. And kids with Down syndrome want to communicate but it just may be harder for them at first. Plus I think the girls will like it as we work on it with Bennett.
Anyways, that's the plan as well as trying to stay healthy. Everyone around this town is sick and wouldn't you know I'm taking Ainsley in for a cough and low grade fever-please pray it's not H1N1!

  1. I can not believe Bennett is 5 months old already! He is precious!! His smile is so sweet. He looks like he loves the exersaucer. Even if he is a little bitty guy!

I remember having to put blankets behind Carly too. She was nowhere near 15lbs at 5 months. She looked like a teeny tiny new born sitting in her high chair. I think she used her baby swing until she was 2. Actually, I used the swing after her second heart surgery and she was 29 months old then.

  3. Wow, it looks like Bennett is doing great! We are still working on the sitting (Colin just turned 6 months) which is going a little slowly because we are still building his trunk muscles. We also have one of the activity exersaucer things as well and Colin's feet can't quite touch either! Cute pictures you have up!

  4. He is just too cute. All three of your children are adorable. My youngest, Rachel, 6 years Ds, has missed all week of school this week. I took her to the doctor yeterday, but the flue test was negative, thank goodness. She is still really stuffy but has not had a fever since Monday. Hope you can keep everybody else in your family well. It is going to be a long winter!

  8. Just found out that a friend's (one I don't see regularly any more) new baby has Ds. They didn't know until after she was born, so no preparation. Mom is 44, same age as me. She also has a 24 yr. old daughter, but her husband had never had children. This was his one shot. After failed in vitro and then an in vitro that ended in miscarriage, they conceived this baby naturally. All of their prenatal tests came back negative for a problem. Then they found out after her birth. They were aware that because of Mom's age, Ds was possible, but decided that they would go ahead and try because they are successful and said if she/he were Ds they could afford the best of everything for her. Well, now their fears are confirmed. Now, all those things you posted about a little while back about grieving for what you've lost is haunting me. I don't see this friend regularly or talk to her, but would love to reach out and support her. I just don't want to be seen as condescending or patronizing. She knows this baby is a blessing and will be a joy, but there are several health concerns too. I don't know what I'm trying to say... Since she hasn't heard from me (except running into her occasionally at stores) does it even make sense that I feel the need to reach out and connect? Anyway, thought maybe you could answer from Mom's point of view. Sorry this got so long.

  9. He absolutely makes my heart melt every time I see him. How do you get anything done but staring at that sweet man. Hope Miss Ainsley stays well. We've done the H1N1 road this year, and it's no fun. Good Luck!!

  10. Wow 5 months already? I've been following your blog--and therefore Bennett's progression--since before he was born and I can't believe that's already been 5+ months. He's doing so well and I love reading about all the updates on your kids--such a wonderful family you have.

  11. Signing is wonderful for DS children. Be prepared when PT starts working hard on crawling, walking ect for the verbalizing to slow way down. But once you are up walking the speech kicks right in. That is why signing was so very important to us. It gave Caleb a way to communate while working hard with PT. Caleb is now 9.....a motor mouth!!!! Running everywhere, plays TBall. A typical boy! Have fun!!!!Jan

  12. Yeah Bennett! Love the excersaucer!!! I am way behind on the blog, trying to catch my breath a bit!!! We started speech a month ago with the OT. MAKE the Pedi write the order. We have been doing oral motor therapy mostly (stetches, exercises), but several other Moms told me to start earlier than 10-12months and I swear it makes a difference. Parker is quite the chatterbox, but so am I and the other kids..so :) not sure it is the speech therapy, but make sure you do it if you want it! Keep everyone well!!! Get your rest too Mom!

  15. I didn't realize how behind I was in my blog reading again. Wow...can't believe that Bennett is already 5 months old. Happy 5 month birthday sweet boy!! Isn't it fun to see him upright in the exersaucer??? Great idea about starting to get him used to the spoon in his mouth. Stick with the food once you start...I have failed miserably with this and now at 19 months, Ella still wants nothing to do with solid food. I thought I needed help in feeding her and stopped instead of just keep on trying so she would get used to it. After seeing pretty much every other kiddo her age eating everything in sight...I now know that I just didn't give her enough time to figure it out before giving up.
