"Milestone Rut"

Yep, that's what we're in folks. Bennett has come to a screeching halt, or so it seems, with his progression. I don't know why I'm surprised because this is how it's always been with him-he goes crazy and does tons of new things and then nothing.

Ugh!

I thought for sure he'd be pulling to stand by now but he just doesn't want to or he gives up too easily. He seems to have the same personality as Ainsley-if he can't do it the first time, forget it! He gets mad and cries and doesn't really want to try again, although I know this isn't entirely true, to give the kid credit he worked very hard at sitting himself up;). He's extremely cautious though and perhaps that's good in some ways {like maybe when he's 3 he won't be running off-I can only hope, right?} but when you've got something that is most likely going to make your life harder, you've kinda gotta have that "go get 'em" attitude and not give up so easily! He's not really happy during his therapies and his eating habits haven't changed.

~Huge Sigh~

Yep, I'm just totally whining right now and for the most part I've chosen to embrace the fact that Bennett has Down syndrome, I mean, I don't feel like I have a choice really. Either dwell on the negative or suck it up, get over it and embrace it. I can't change it so why sulk over it? But right now is one of those times that I'm not a big fan of that pesky, extra chromosome.

I guess I just have to keep telling myself:

The longer it takes him to do something, the sweeter it will be when he finally does it.

With that said, be prepared for a huge "Bennett pulled to stand!!!" post in the future-LOL!

  1. I hear ya!! Maddie is lacking motivation to! It concerns me for the future...the only thing that gets her is Max's chocolate milk sippy cup and thomas trains that move!! also I am sure your ot is telling you this but ours tells us we need to put things up so she wants to get them down...so everything is on a box in our house at the moment!! thanks for sharing...Bennett looks great!! smiles

  4. I know it is so much easier said than done, but try not to sweat it. He will be doing it before you know it, and then you will wish he wasn't! How cliche is that?! When Kaia was little, I too stressed over her hitting her milestones, and now at age 6, it really doesn't matter when she hit them. I actually forget when she first stood up. I know you want to know that he WILL be able to do it, but he will, so try not to rush it along.

  5. Oh boy do I hear you! I think all our kids have a similar MO...no progress and them whamo...huge strides! I get down in the dumps too on those plateaus and it's definitely frustrating. Try to have faith that he will do and he will surprise you by doing it when you least expect it. Bennett is doing amazing and he is such a cutie pie that I love keeping up with what he is doing! Keep the faith and I can't wait for that huge post!!! You will hear my cheers from CA!

  6. I hear you, Adrienne! We've been working on crawling for officially one year now - I get so bored and frustrated doing the same exercises all the time. It looks like Chase will skip crawling and just go to walking....so who knows - maybe we'll suddenly have a true toddler on our hands soon! Has Bennett been making big strides in speech or OT? Maybe he's working hard on some other skills in the meantime. Keep up the motivation to go on working the exercises with him - you do such a great job of making it all seem like play! Really - it's been helpful to me to see you working hard and creatively with Bennett!

  7. That extra chromosome does add a little something special, though. He is adorable! And, you're right, the wait will make everything sweeter when he does do it. My cousin has a child that is developmentally delayed, due to being a micropreemie. Every milestone was cheered by all of us. Rachael is an angel like Bennett and angels are definitely worth the wait. :)

  8. Im a new reader of your blog, I must say Bennett is cute as a button!! Both my boys have Down syndrome (both are adopted) and my oldest, Malachi, is two and still can't eat table food. It's a work in progress and we work at it every day. Please don't stay discouraged for to long, it will get better. Prayers coming your way!!

  9. Hugs Adrienne! I know exactly how you feel, progress definitely ebbs and sways. I find myself getting down about it too but that feeling comes and goes too. I think it's just something we are going to have to get used to. I think personality does play a part but I think you are doing fantastic with him and he will get it soon.

  10. "He'll do it on his own time." How many times have you heard that? But it's true. As they get older I guess you just get used to "their own time". I say that with ease and, of course, I'm sure to run into a lot of frustration this year with my boys' time clocks as they've just started kindergarten, a realm where comparisons and keeping up with the Jones' kids will be front and center in my mind (and on their progress reports). DS teaches us patience and teaches them, motivation. Nobody said these lessons would come easy for us or them ;o). Good luck to Bennet with the pulling up... it'll come when he's ready (LOL)

  14. Oh I hear you! We just finally were able to post Lindsey is standing. I remember when someone told me when Lindsey was just weeks old how thrilled he was that their little girl started walking on her 2nd bday. Now I know why he was shouting it to everyone he could tell.

  15. He'll get it all in Bennett's time. :) Our PT and OT therapists said that Peyton is just going full gorilla on gross motor skills leaving everything else behind (so he pulls himself to a stand, but to feed himself like Bennett was doing in your video? Forget about it!). Maybe Bennett's doing the opposite and focusing on the finer things like feeding himself and communicating. And then when he decides he's mastered those things to his liking, he'll probably switch over to the gross motor skills. I can't tell you how many times I repeat consonant sounds to Peyton hoping and praying he will suddenly bust out with a different sound other than, "AAAAAHHHHHH!" In Peyton's time I figure. :)
