So after a week of pushing food away and seeming a little "off", I thought I'd be on the safe side and take Bennett into the pediatrician....
Yeeeahh...I felt a tad bit foolish bringing him in after seeing how he was acting in the exam room-lol! But it has been a week since he's wanted to eat his solids (he'll drink his pediasure) and his poop wasn't normal either. He had a really bad Speech/Ot session this morning-screaming when they offered him food, wouldn't calm down-just not normal. So I thought possibly strep (he threw up last Friday, low grade fever, and very lethargic last weekend) plus others had mentioned strep as well.
So yes, I tend to air on the side of caution with Bennett but he was a heart baby and the whole Down syndrome thing and the high threshold for pain...I just tend to freak a little with him!
Results...negative for strep, no fever, just wait it out a few more days with the food. He's also back on Prevacid to see if it helps with his self-feeding issues as well as his current rebellion towards food. {Reflux issues in the past}.
(sorry, poor iPhone pic)
So yes, I'm cautious but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry, right?!
Just hope he starts eating his food again soon!!! And I REALLY hope this isn't a rebellious toddler thing!
Please take my advice with a grain of salt but have you tried using the chew tubes or nuk brush on his mouth before meal time? That's what our OT does. Wakes up the mouth and gets him ready for foods. Also, try lots of flavoring on the food and try and have him play with his food as much as possible. We went to a feeding specialist and she would have Joaquin play with cars in pudding and ranch dressing and she would have him use those puffy veggie sticks as play toys too to dip in sauces etc. It just desensitized Joaquin and he was more willing to put things in his mouth. We also found out he likes really cold or really warm things....anything lukewarm or in between just wasn't gonna go in. Finally, try limiting some of the high calorie fluids....otherwise he won't ever be hungry enough to want to try the food. The hungrier Joaquin is/was the more willing he was to eat solids. Hope this helps!!!
ReplyDeletehe's so stinkin cute!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my word, these pictures are too adorable! I am guilty of the same thing , atleast with the $25 copay I can show off my munchkie to the nurses :)
ReplyDeleteElla always pulls out the charm at the Doctor's I think he thinks I'm crazy!
ReplyDeleteOwen is like this when he is teething it passes as quickly as it comes on.
ReplyDeleteOMG I'm glad you took him in too...that way we got to see these CUTE photos!
ReplyDeleteOH my gosh, he is so darn cute!! Kellan takes prevacid too. Every time he's sick (or we think he is) as soon as we get to the doctors he acts just fine!! Little buggers!!
ReplyDeleteI think you were right to get him checked out when he wasn't acting/eating like his normal.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm overly cautious using a clear, plastic rain cover for our stroller to keep people from touching Anthony. But, his immunity is so low right now, it's what keeps him safe. Just like you taking Bennett in to make sure he's doing ok.
These boys need us to make sure they grow up strong and healthy!
Always better safe than sorry.
ReplyDeleteBoth my kids have gone through periods where they will not eat. Then they go through periods where all they do is eat. Kids are weird, lol. Glad everything checked out ok ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm in the "Overly Cautious Mother" club too. Better safe than sorry, I always say.
